HB 423 - Prescribing Authority Signed Into Law

Posted about 8 years ago by Kathleen Adragna

Today, Governor Rick Scott officially signed HB 423 into law.  After more than 20 years of debate in the legislature, Florida Advanced Practice Nurses and Physician Assistants may finally prescribe controlled substances.  This is a huge step toward full practice authority!  This bill, known as the "Barbara Lumpkin Prescribing Act" allows for the prescribing of certain controlled substances, to be determined by a Board of Nursing formulary committee which will convene this summer.  Please stay tuned for more details, which we will provide as they become available.  The law will go into affect on January 1, 2017.

Florida NAPNAP would like to formally thank Representative Cary Pigman, MD, Senator Denise Grimsley, RN, Barbara Lumpkin and all of the lobbying organizations who have advocated for this bill for more than 20 years.  We appreciate all of your efforts!!
